I’ll be away just for a few days but I’ll leave you with a glimpse of the handmade marzipan fruits and vegetables that you can buy in this glorious shop in Kadıköy called Şekerci Cafer Erol – literally Confectioner Cafer Erol (his name), founded in 1807.
another of Istanbul’s delights … |
If you don’t know it, it’s very easy to find, right in the çarşı or market of Kadıköy, on a corner.
What did I buy?
- gül reçeli/rose jam
- a box of mixed Turkish Delight
- 2 small packets of helva -see my post for what to do with it
I added a bottle of virgin olive oil and another of pure nar ekşisi or pomegranate molasses:
here they all are.. |
Presents for the friend I will be staying with …I’m sure she’ll love them, just like we do!
What do you take your friends when you go visiting?

Claudia, Lucky friend! What lovely looking marzipan candies. I absolutely love that stuff but I've never seen this place in Kadiköy. They're really beautiful. Of course, the other gifts also sound scrumptious but we know that while you're away, you're going to be sticking to your diet, don't we?
Do you know what? I actually did! Not a drop of anything untoward passed my lips…
Having just had a mammoth marmalade session, my friends will be getting this.
Hi: I think that homemade stuff is always nice … they will love it!
Love the sekerci shops here! I've never bought these marzipan treats but I do love the badem ezmesi from Edirne! Turkish lokum and baklava are always great hits! However, I've also done Turkish honey, olive oil, nar, fig vinegar and a few jams before. Love to share these products with friends. Enjoy your trip!
Hi Joy! Thanks for sharing. They loved the stuff I brought esp the lokum and helva…we all enjoy different things from different cultures, I think ..
What wonderful marzipan candies….they look so artistically made. We always buy Koska Helva here too, they have lots of different flavors. These make nice gifts.
Hi Erica! Gosh do they have Koska where you live too?? Amazing. Yes, those candies are all handmade and they are just gorgeous. Works of art, really.
