And where exactly is that, you may well ask – well, from Istanbul it takes 5 ½ hours to drive down. You cross the Dardanelles to Çanakkale and then down past Troy. This is a great area to visit if you like history but it is also very scenic. And then our village: Assos which dates back to the 4th Century BC and was beloved by Aristotle and St Paul. It has a spectacular position right opposite the Greek island of Lesbos sometimes known as Midilli.
this was yesterday at 7.30pm from the bottom of our garden |
We have had our house here in the village of Behramkale for the last 17 years – even to say that amazes me. That it’s been so long, I mean. We have battled with the garden, invested a lot of time, effort, not to mention money in this place but we love it. And to our great satisfaction, our children now grownup, also love it. Let’s see if new little granddaughter Eva will love it!
below, you can see the ancient necropolis |
Anyway I drove down on Monday and the journey was fine if a bit long. That last bit always drags.
the lavender in the garden has grown absolutely huge |
this is the apricot tree that we successfully grafted onto an almond tree |
And today I went to check out our cows. While I was in Istanbul with new baby and Daughter No2, after a suitable interval, TT came down here and amongst other things, bought 8 more cows!! Our herd is growing! They look in great health and I was very impressed with their shed – in fact, the whole operation is looking pretty good, I would say! We have great hopes.
milking time this evening |
Hatice with 25 litres of fresh milk from two of those cows in her village of Paşaköy at 8pm tonight |
This milk will be collected at 10am tomorrow morning after the morning milking session. It seems the cows are stressed after the trauma of being moved from Selçuk to here and not producing as much milk as anticipated! There is so much to learn. TT says that the 8 new cows are between 14-16 months old and have never calved; the only milk-producing ones are the 2 we already had.
I will keep you posted …
oh oh the electricity has just gone off!!!
I love Assos, entirely based on your photos. It looks like exactly the sort of fantasy-place I entertain moving to someday.
I'm sure Eva will love it too! Right around 15 months when she gets a look at those gorgeous cows, with milk coming out of them no less!
Have a great vacation!
