Why am I such a total aficionado of being a seasonal cook in Turkey?
For example, we were out to dinner last week at Sahan in Suadiye: the reason we went there is to enjoy their fabulous kebab with yeni dünya or loquats, those wonderful orange fruits that you can see everywhere right now. You can only have it now. We await this fruit with great anticipation every spring! They may look a bit battered but their taste is great. I really recommend that you go out and find this seasonal kebab!

But that evening there was something extra-special: this came without our asking and this is what I love about Turkey: straight from the kitchen, still warm on the dish, not ordered by us but nonetheless brought to our table:
yaprak sarma with fresh garlic and can eriği,/green plums |
Who could resist this?
These green plums along with the orange loquats are a sure sign of spring here: whether we like them or not is something else….

They are pretty sour as their bright green colour indicates but when they are cooked, this subsides and they become instead moist and juicy….
Presented like this, what could we say? Piquant! Delicious!!
When you live here, these seasonal delights present themselves and everyone is overjoyed to see them! Every year the same thing, but the joy is renewed.
